Vi-Dieu Nguyen

Head of Story

Vi-Dieu Nguyen is the head of story at Sony Pictures Animation, currently working on the highly-anticipated conclusion to the studio's groundbreaking Spider-Verse trilogy, “Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse.”

Nguyen grew up in Orange County, California in a Vietnamese household during the ‘80s and ‘90s. His parents fed him a steady stream of movies on VHS and drawing books from the public library, which really came in handy for his life choices.

Nguyen decided he wanted to work in animation after seeing "The Little Mermaid” when he was six. When he was eleven, he did a book report on Walt Disney and learned about a school he established to train animators called CalArts. He then worked hard on his portfolio to get into CalArts, got his degree, and followed it up by joining Pixar's first story internship program. He then went on to work at major studios including DreamWorks Animation, LAIKA, and Blue Sky Studios.

Nguyen also worked on such prestigious projects as his friend Patrick McHale’s Emmy Award®-winning "Over the Garden Wall." Then he landed at Sony Pictures Animation for an especially amazing gig: story artist on “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse,” which went on to win the Academy Award® for Best Animated Feature and became a highly influential film in the animation industry.

From there, Nguyen went over to Warner Animation Group and became the head of story on "DC League of Super Pets,” before taking another head of story gig at Netflix. From there, he went full circle and came back to Sony Pictures Animation in 2024.
