James Baxter is currently serving as a visual development artist for Sony Pictures Animation’s original animated musical Vivo, which features songs and lyrics written by award-winning creative force Lin Manuel Miranda and is slated for theatrical release in December 2020.
James is a recipient of the 2017 Winsor McCay Award from ASIFA-Hollywood for his over-30-year career contributions to animation. James’ animation was first featured in several renowned Walt Disney Animation films including various characters in Who Framed Roger Rabbit and The Little Mermaid. He supervised the characters of Belle in Beauty and the Beast, Rafiki in The Lion King, and Quasimodo in The Hunchback of Notre Dame, which earned him his first Annie Award nomination.
Following Disney, James took his talents to DreamWorks Animation, where he contributed to the animation of Moses in The Prince of Egypt and served as a senior supervising animator for Tulio in The Road to El Dorado and Spirit in Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron, for which he received a VES Award nomination. James also served as a supervising animator for Shrek 2, Madagascar, and How to Train Your Dragon 2 as well as head of character animation for The Croods.
Under his own independent animation company, James Baxter Animation, he served as animation supervisor for Enchanted and directed the dream sequence animation in Kung Fu Panda, for which he received an Annie Award for Best Character Animation in a Feature Production.
Originally from Bristol, England, James currently resides in Los Angeles, California.
